When you’re in the mood for dinner with a view, just fire up the propane BBQ and pull up a chair at the outdoor dining table, which seats six.

-ACTIVITIES/ATTRACTIONS-
Visitors come to the High Desert for its unique landscape, culture, and recreational opportunities, as well as for the weather - hot and dry summers and mild winters at our high altitude. Joshua Tree and the communities surrounding the Joshua Tree National Park include Flamingo Heights, Pioneertown, Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, and Landers. You’ll be close to all the action at Shelter 1. Some of our favorite options available to you:

–Joshua Tree National Park: 800,000 acres of mystical beauty - Joshua Tree National Park is one of the world’s most incredible natural desert treasures. Sweeping, grand in scale and populated by granite monoliths and voluptuous rock and boulder formations. This quiet land, conducive to meditation and roaming, was carved by extremes in climate - wind, rain and an ever-present, relentless sun. Diverse forms of plant life are found everywhere, but none as unique or prevalent as the park’s namesake: the Joshua tree, standing majestically across the vast topography.

–Pioneertown: Step back in time to thus rustic Old West-style village. Wander through the historic buildings, visit unique shops, catch a live music performance at Pappy & Harriets, and experience the Wild West charm.

• The Integratron: New age-y healing destination with a sound bath, originally designed by ufologist George Van Tassel with the goal of reversing the aging process.

** Cleaning Protocols ***
As the only professional management company in the area, we have always maintained exceptional cleaning standards. We pay above the living wage standards; 100% of your cleaning fee is paid to the cleaners (i.e. no profit to us) and we insist on a professional level of cleaning between guests. We love the High Desert for a lot of reasons - including the open spaces, lack of crowds, and dry weather that we believe make it a safe place to visit.
Access Access
You have access to every room and feature of this beautiful home.

If you need a little more space, Shelter: Two can also be rented in conjunction with its sister property, Shelter: One, which sits on an adjacent 2 1/2-acre parcel of land. This is the perfect arrangement for larger groups.

Shelter 1 was thoughtfully located to take advantage of the beautiful views in the high desert. We really enjoyed the outdoor spaces and tranquil settings. The location was ideal next to Joshua Tree West entrance. The layout of the home was simple and perfectly functional. Pet friendly accommodations with a bed and other amenities. An ideal place for peaceful retreat. It was easy to envision securing all of the properties for a group vacation with room for everyone. Thanks for a great vacation.

This place was amazing for a weekend getaway from Los Angeles. It was exactly as advertised it was close to the park and the Main Street, but also felt remote.

The most quintessential Joshua Tree experience! This thoughtfully curated space is perfect for those coming to the area to visit the park, it's SO CLOSE to the West entrance! The modern desert vibes were top notch. We enjoyed use of the fully stocked kitchen, hot tub, and fire pit. Would return in a heartbeat!

This was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed. The airbnb was private / secluded, and also less than a mile away from the West entrance to Joshua tree national park. The kitchen was fully stocked with almost everything you could think of (cooking utensils, spices, wine opener, vegetable peeler, etc). The views were amazing, the hot tub was very relaxing. The dog friendly amenities were a wonderful touch! They provided dog beds, lint roller, poop bags, etc. I only hope I have the chance to stay here again one day!

Incredibly peaceful secluded location. Fantastic layout in the house with great views from every corner. Unbelievable communication - they took care of a few things that came up during our stay immediately! Super comfortable bed, well equipped kitchen, just a very comfortable place to stay all while just a few short minutes from the JTNP entrance. And sitting in the hot tub under the stars was an added bonus! We will definitely be back!

We had a good time staying at this place during our visit to Joshua National Park. Great location close to park west entrance. Peaceful and beautiful outdoor setting. Host provided clear instructions for check-in and check-out. However we did encounter two issues. First was related to the listing stating EV charging being available. Once we arrived we realized there is a 110V outlet in the carport. There was also a level 1 tesla charger which we couldn't use since we don't own a tesla. We had to drive to Palm Springs just to charge our EV so we could drive around the park. I recommend the host update the listing to clarify. Another issue was related to hot tub controls not working. Overall, I recommend this place if you are visiting Joshua Park and do not need EV charging during your stay.

Comfortable home with good location close to hiking at JT national park. We’ve stayed here several times but the property now needs some updating love and the WiFi was very spotty. Homestead Modern are great and very responsive hosts, we book most properties through them and have rarely been disappointed.

When I first found this house on AirBNB I really fell in love of how private and peaceful it looked. Well photos did not do this place justice. It was everything as described AND MORE! Very close to the park, sat in the hot tub and saw all the stars, had wine by the outdoor fireplace and everything here allowed myself and my fiancé to feel really detached from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Anyone wanting a place near Joshua Tree, want privacy, great amenities and a fantastic experience DO NOT WAIT! Book this place!

Wonderful house in a great location close to the park entrance. We can't say enough positive things about Shelter 1. The floor plan is perfect, every little detail from decoration to furniture is thought through and unique. We loved the outdoor shower and the different lounge areas depending on were the sun hits the house. The large windows all around make you really enjoy the desert vibe and peacefulness of Joshua Tree. It's the best Airbnb we stayed at in Joshua Tree and will definitely return. Everything was spotless and clean, great communication, easy check-in, comfy beds... Thank you for giving us such a perfect experience for my birthday!

What a great space! So clean, very mid-century modern, but comfortable and well-appointed. The large windows offered spectacular views, but the provided adjustable west facing shades gave us the ability to limit sun exposure and manage the temperature in the house better. Great outside amenities! We loved sitting on the back patio chairs with the fire pit on as we watched the sunset. The bed was comfortable, bathrooms were well stocked and just amazing! Love the landscape-both natural and built. Proximity to Joshua Tree NP is stellar-this is close enough that we spent the day in the park, came home to get some dinner and then went back out into the park at night to star gaze! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone considering it!

This was an amazing stay! Secluded enough to where you feel on your own (especially at night) but not extremely remote to where you are scavenging for necessities. Would absolutely do it again and highly recommend for anyone looking to have a desert getaway!

Don’t walk, run to this amazing listing. Ten minutes from town and the national park, with an amazing view and amenities if you don’t want to leave (hot tubbing while the sun sets over the desert? yes please!) We had an amazing time and the hosts respond incredibly fast. We also got our fair share of wildlife- on the few days we were there we saw a hare and a roadrunner that came up to the property so definitely be prepared for little visitors!

The property is conveniently located near the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park which makes it easy to find hiking trials to enjoy! I will definitely be coming back to enjoy this property again.

This house and location are AMAZING. So much so that as soon as my girlfriend and I walked in the front door we extended our stay for an extra night, and were so glad we did. The hosts are super responsive, accommodating and kind. The house is well appointed, clean, and you instantly feel relaxed being there. You can watch beautiful sunsets over the mountains from the back porch, where there are Joshua Trees within feet of the building. It was scorching hot when we were there (July), so we only tried the fire pit for a moment, but could see how in cooler times of the year it was be so so nice. The hot tub up a well lit path from the house is excellent for stargazing and sunsets, and the "cowboy pool" was surprisingly refreshing as well. From the house you can be in Joshua Tree NP within 5-10 minutes. All in all, a wonderful place and we can't wait to come back.

I stayed for 2 nights over a holiday weekend with my husband to explore Joshua Tree National Park. The house was easy to locate given the directions the host provided and was very close to the park entrance and not far from a few restaurants and small stores. The house looked like the photos and was very clean. They offer outdoor amenities like a hot tub, which was very nice. They have a small tub outdoors, but definitely not a pool. This house is closer to the road than I anticipated. Not many houses nearby but if you want to stargaze this isn't the best house, as you will see car lights. In the kitchen there are a few items for cooking (6 spices and oil). Prepare to buy everything else. I would recommend buying bottled water even though they have a Brita in the fridge. The house is definitely exposed due to the windows. The views were incredible, but if you are not comfortable being exposed at night (if lights are on), this house isn't for you. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would recommend.

Gorgeous house with beautiful views from every room. It was veer windy when we visited so we couldn’t take advantage of the outdoor spaces, but it all looked lovely :) one thing to note is that it can be hard to find in the dark. The street sign is carved in a piece of wood that’s tiny and impossible to see at night, so make sure you follow the written directions! Would def stay again.

We had a wonderful time at shelter! The property is beautiful with incredible views from every room and close proximity to the park entrance. The kitchen is well stocked, and the hot tub and firepit were easy to operate. The host was accessible and a pleasure to communicate with. Upon arrival, there was a water leak in the kitchen. The host was responsive and sent maintenance over quickly. Maintenance was attentive and thorough. Although they were not able to repair the issue during our stay, it wasn’t a bother. I only mention this issue so future guests can check with the host that the leak has been repaired prior to their stay. I highly recommend this property! And we would absolutely return!

Where do I start? This house was incredible. From the fire pit (which we used daily), to the nice hot tub to stargazing, to being only a mile away from the park, to the beauty of the property… this place rocked. My wife was so jealous that this wasn’t our actual house due to how amazing it was. We saw multiple coyotes (heard them too) around the area and it was just magical.

Shelter one is stylish and comfortable. It was fabulous to wake up every morning with the amazing view of the desert. Even though it was hot we had breakfast lunch and dinner outside in the shaded area where there was a breeze. Be aware that you can hear Traffic in the evenings as the road leading to the park gets very busy. It would’ve been nice to have been a little further away from everything .Having said that a weekend at shelter one felt like I’d had a week long vacation. I was sad to leave.

Stylish place but decently disappointing at this price point. For over $850 a night, the place was not as clean as expected. Trash was left near the hot tub area, dead bugs, stained towels, missing amenities, wads of hair in shower drains, ice in freezer is using unfiltered water (very bad), brita water filter needs to be replaced, etc. I did alert the host of these cleaning issues. Especially during COVID, for an expensive rental, I would expect more to be done. I knew the wifi wouldn't be great as mentioned in the description but it you really could not use it for online classes or WFH/zoom meetings. It took me hours to attempt to update Google Chrome to where I resorted to using Microsoft Edge and my personal hotspot. The above issues were mentioned in other recent reviews so I was not the lone experience. I would highly suggest a strong humidifier as an additional amenity for this Airbnb, or future renters, bring your own. I would also suggest to do more mopping of floors and vacuuming of carpets. As someone who does not bring shoes into the house, you could feel grime from the floor while barefoot. I do agree with one of the previous reviews that this Airbnb is overpriced and on the smaller side- I would value it at $300-400 a night. There is a busy road nearby but is not too noticeable whilst inside the Airbnb. I did appreciate the stylish themed decor, it does get you in the desert/country mood. The AC is strong which is good for the hot summer. Fireplace and surrounding seating is comfortable and beautiful. The directions to the Airbnb were very detailed which was good as some of the roads are hard to find. What I liked the most was the beautiful scenery during sunrise from the master room. The area is private which I liked. Do be careful because people here do speed on the road. Overall, I enjoyed the stay but there is room for improvement for cleaning

Clean and very comfortable, great layout. Super close to the park entrance and easy to get to town. AC keeps the house cool even on crazy hot days. Fire Pit is great at night, you will get some car noise from the main road, but not terrible. Only complaint is the wifi/bandwidth is very weak, not enough to do zoom calls (if you need to work) or stream a movie at night without frequent drop outs/buffering.

This place is well designed and furnished, but it wasn't as clean as we expected during Covid. There was popcorn between the cushions on the couch, an empty plastic bottle under the bed, and a few odd spots on windows that didn't look completely cleaned off. There's a very loud and highly trafficked road leading into the park maybe 150 yards away from the property, traffic is constant from morning until later in the evening well past sunset. It's the desert without a lot of obstacles between the road and the house, sound carries, and it really eliminates any of that advertised “away from it all feeling" or a sense of "tranquility." That being said it's got good access to Joshua Tree National Park, I mean really really good access. So if you're paying for that and not seclusion + peace/quiet, than this is a great location. We booked this place last minute and there was not a lot left on the market, when I've shifted my dates to have a four week lead time, this place is stunningly overpriced. There are many, many larger, more private, stylishly furnished and well designed rentals listed on air bnb in Joshua Tree. While communication with Shelter was great, we won't be staying here at this price again, it should be somewhere competitive around $150-$200 a night.
